do online friends count? does our involvement with technology render us more likely to die alone? have we become less empathetic with those in a state of virtual loneliness as the internet has matured? and then it settles down to this: “everybody knows the sort of gnawing ache that hits when you find yourself online late at night. you feel … like a loser. and you want to see if anyone else is out there.” we will never know what our lives would have been like if we hadn’t ‘logged on’ in the late 90’s (i count the start date somewhere in ’96-’97 when i got my first email account, although i didn’t get ‘serious’ until 2000 when i bought my first computer). but so far the internet – and i have experienced quite a lot of it- has never once made me feel like a loser. i have often felt angry with myself for getting so riled up by idiots online, i have felt the need to step back from a dark and kinky abyss the internet can provide easy access to (if you know where to look), and i have kicked myself for wasting excessive time online, time that could have been spent writing novels and creating successful small businesses. but a loser?
